Biographical notes
Aḥmed-i Dāʿī was a distinguished figure in early Ottoman literature. Renowned for his literary skills, Dāʿī was also a prolific writer. From his original works and translations we can infer that he had knowledge in various fields such as poetry, tafsir, astronomy, astrology, dream interpretation, language (Turkish, Arabic and Persian), and medicine. His father’s name is İbrāhīm ; his grandfather’s name is Meḥmed. Sources agree that Aḥmed-i Dāʿī is from the principality of Germiyān, but his date and place of birth are not certain. We can tell from his works that he lived during the reigns of Murād I (d. 791/1389), Yaʿḳūb II of Germiyān (d. 831/1428) , Emīr Süleymān (d. 813/1411) and Murād II (d. 855/1451). According to ʿĀlī and Sehī, he served as qadi in the principality of Germiyān for some time. Yaʿḳūb II took him under his patronage after the death of Germiyān prince Süleymān Şāh (d. 789/1387). Emīr Süleymān, who was known to be very generous to men of letters, probably took him under his patronage after the defeat of Yaʿḳūb II by Yıldırım and the subsequent Ottoman annexation of the Germiyān lands. Aḥmed-i Dāʿī dedicated his work Çeng-nāme, written in 808 AH [1406 CE], to Emīr Süleymān. In his Dīvān, he also wrote some poems in praise of Emīr Süleymān. After the death of Emīr Süleymān in 813 AH [1411 CE], Aḥmed-i Dāʿī began serving under the patronage of Çelebi Meḥmed (816/1413-824/1421), as is evident from a qasida that he wrote for the latter’s enthronement. Aḥmed-i Dāʿī dedicated his Persian Dīvān to Vezīr-i aʿẓām ʿOsmāncıḳlı Ḫalīl Pāşā (d. after 816/1413). After a period of low attention, he was finally accepted to the court as a tutor for Çelebi Meḥmed (816/1413-824/1421) son Murād II (824/1421-848/1444). He wrote his Arabic to Persian dictionary ʿUḳūdü’l-cevāhir for Murād II (824/1421-848/1444). After Çelebi Meḥmed (816/1413-824/1421) death in 824 [1421 CE], Murād II (824/1421-848/1444) took him under his patronage. He wrote Tercüme-i Tezkiretü’l-evliyā during this period, probably his last work. Aḥmed-i Dāʿī’s date of death is unknown. There is a mosque, a district and a hammam known by his name in Bursa . According to tradition, the tomb near the mosque known as Dāʿī Dede belongs to him.

Biographical notes
An Anatolian poet and man of letters from the late fourteenth and early fifteenth-century, Aḥmedī composed both in Old Anatolian Turkish and Persian. Although his date of birth and origins remain debatable, the strongest evidence points to his origins from the Germiyan (Turkey) region of western Anatolia. After furthering his education in Cairo studying under the religious scholar Akmal al-Dīn Bābartī in the late 14th century [1300-1399 CE], he returned to western Anatolia where he received the patronage of local rulers such as that of the Aydınids based in Ayasuluk and the Germiyanid ruler, Süleymān Shāh (r. 1367-1388) of Kütahya. He later entered Ottoman service and dedicated his literary works to Bayezid I's son, Süleymān Çelebi (Emīr Süleymān). Perhaps the most prolific Anatolian of his generation, Aḥmedī did much to advance the Islamic literary culture of Rūm, producing a variety of works in both Turkish and Persian, dealing with a range of poetic and religious themes.

Biographical notes
One of Ḥacı Bayram’s successors who achieved significant fame and standing during his lifetime. His name may have been Aḥmed Şemseddīn, ʿAbdullāh or Muḥyiddīn. His father was known by the name Ḥacı. Other than his son who was his successor, Aḳbıyıḳ’s lineage also includes Ramażān Baba from Akkerman who had a lodge in Bursa. Aḳbıyıḳ had long hair and did not wear a cap, the reason for which is explained in a hagiographical tale involving Ḥacı Bayram. He had an ecstatic temperament. Hagiographical stories narrate his fallout with Ḥacı Bayram, but the issue may have been resolved before the latter’s death. In the year of 841 AH [1437 CE], Aḳbıyıḳ was granted the property of the town of Austus in Yenişehir, Bursa by Murād II. The ownership was subsequently approved by Meḥmed II in 856 AH [1452 CE]. Aḳbıyıḳ was famous for his wealth, for which the town ownership may have been the source. Aḳbıyıḳ participated in the battles of Varna and Kosovo during the reign of Murād II. He also took part in the conquest of Constantinople during the reign of Meḥmed II. He built a mosque in the district of Ahırkapı in Constantinople, which includes a visitation site (maḳām) in his name indicating that he died in 894 AH [1488-1489 CE]. Sources generally agree that Aḳbıyıḳ died during the reign of Bayezid II. He is buried in Bursa. His tomb was once part of a lodge complex built by Aḳbıyıḳ with the revenue from the town of Austus. Aḳbıyıḳ was among the names in the lineage of the Celvetiyye order. The many pen names attributed to him include Şems-i Hüdā, Şemseddīn, Hüdāyī Şemseddīn. The fact that Aḳşemseddīn also used the pen name of Şemseddīn has led to a mixing of the poems by the two poets.

Biographical notes
Court poet of Murād II, who is famous for his ḳaṣīde with the rhyme of “güneş,” presented to Murād II. Aḥmed Paşa wrote a naẓīre to this poem. ‘Aṭā’ī is also known for initiating the use of proverbs in ġazels and being one of the few Anatolian poets to use the genre of ṭuyuġ. Born in Edirne, ‘Aṭā’ī is the son of the Ottoman vizier and architect Ḫacı ‘İvaż Paşa (d. 831/1428). According to Laṭīfī, he is also Süleyman Çelebi’s brother; yet this cannot be corroborated by evidence. ‘Aṭā’ī may have had a Dīvān, but there is no extant copy. His poems have survived in famous naẓīre collections. He also has poems in Persian. He makes reference to Kamāl Khudjandī (d. 803/1400-1) in one of his poems. ‘Aṭā’ī made a special effort to use Turkish elements in court poetry. He was influenced by the poetry of Şeyḫī (d. 832/1429). He died at a young age in Bursa, where he is buried.

Biographical notes
In his only extant ḳasīde, Ḫoca Dehhānī states that he came to Anatolia from Khorassān with the hope of returning there some day. According to secondary studies, Ḫoca Dehhānī came to Anatolia during the reign of either ‘Alā al-dīn Keyḳubād III (697/1298-701/1302) or ‘Alā al-dīn Keyḳubād I (618/1220-634/1237). He spent time in the sultan’s palace and was commissioned to write a Seljuk Şeh-nāme. According to Şikārī’s Kitāb-ı Tevārīḫ-i Ḳaramāniyye, this nonextant Persian work consisted of 20,000 couplets. Some scholars, on the other hand, assert that the author of the mentioned work was in fact Ḳāni‘ī-i Ṭūsī (d. after 672/1273). Certain clues in Dehhānī’s poetry suggest that he may have been alive in 1361. The presence of his poetry in important fifteenth and sixteenth century mecmū‘as, the selection of one of his poems to Şeyḫoġlı (d. 817/1414?)’s Kenzü’l-Küberā as well as the reference to him in Ḥaṭīboġlı Muḥammed (d. after 838/1435)'s Baḥru’l-ḥaḳā’iḳ all suggest that Dehhānī had notable fame during and after his lifetime. What distinguished Dehhānī from his contemporaries was the fact that unlike most of them, he did not focus on religious or Sufi subjects in his poems. Instead, his poems treated topics such as the pleasures and sufferings of profane love, the spring season, and joyful gatherings where alcohol is served. Dehhānī’s poems are considered to be the first examples to the subsequent influence of classical Persian poetry on Ottoman literature.

Biographical notes
Gülşehrī's identity has been much disputed. The pen name Gülşehrī indicates that he was a poet from the northwestern Cappadocian town of Gülşehir (Zoropassos, Arapsun), which lay in the Selçuk province of Kırşehir in between the towns of Hacıbektaş to the north and Nevşehir to the south. According to Köprülü, based on İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzesi, no. 1360, he was named eş-Şeyḫ Aḥmed el-Gülşehrī(الشيخ احمد الكلشهري). Some Turkish scholars speculate that he was sent to the region of Kırşehir at the end of the thirteenth century [1200-1299 CE] as a disciple of Sulṭān Walad (سلطان ولد), although there is no firm evidence to support this supposition. There have also been attempts to connect him to the Mawlawī shaykh by the name of Süleyman. Internal evidence from his work indicates that he was Sufi shaykh and zāwiya leader from with strong akhī ties.

Little is known about his life, but he is recognised for his work the Sī-nāme (نامه سى), which translates Emīr Ḥüseynī Sādāt el-Ġūrī (d. after 729/1329)’s work by the same title. He is also known for a nazira that he allegedly wrote for the Qasida of Salmān Sawajī (d. 778/1376) (ساوجي, سلمان).

Biographical notes
Nesīmī is an early Ottoman poet and mystic, famous for his Ḥurūfī worldview. He is believed to have come from Nesīm, near Baghdād. He was most likely of Turkoman origin, although his title of “Seyyid” also points to Arab blood. About 804 AH [1401 CE] he became a follower of Faḍl Allāh Ḥurūfī (d. 796/1394), whom he personally met, and eventually became his successor. After Faḍl Allāh’s death, he left Azerbaijan for Anatolia. He came to Bursa during the reign of Murād I (761-91/1360-89) and was not well received here. Ḥacı Bayram (d. 833/1430) refused to see him in Ankara. He eventually went to Aleppo, where he was flayed for his heretical views in 820 AH [1417 CE] (other dates are also given in the historical sources). Evliyā Çelebi (d. 1095/1684) mentions a lodge and a tomb for Nesīmī in this city. Nesīmī had Dīvāns in both Persian and Turkish, which he knew equally well, as well as possibly a Dīvān in Arabic which is no longer extant. His Turkish shows the characteristics of the Ādharī dialect. Nesīmī’s poetry focuses on Ḥurūfī teachings, the doctrine of the oneness of being, and the praise of the Twelve Imams. The latter aspect, in addition to his martyrdom, has led to the Alevi adoption of Nesīmī, who consider him as one of their seven great poets. Nesīmī also had an important historical role in the development of classical literature in Turkish, with his extensive use of complex images (maḍmūn).

Biographical notes
Naḳḳāş Ṣafī was a court poet from Bursa, who lived during the reigns of Meḥmed I, and Murād II. He probably came to know Murād II during the sultan’s time in Bursa. While a companion to Murād II, Naḳḳāş Ṣafī was falsely accused and thrown in prison. He obtained the help of military judge Veliyyüddīn b. İlyās, the father of Aḥmed Paşa (d. 902/1496-97). Soon after being released from prison, he died in Edirne, where he was buried. The information on Naḳḳāş Ṣafī figuring in the bibliographical dictionaries is corraborated by references in his poetry. Although Ṣafī wrote laudatory poetry for a high number of officials, he had difficulty finding patronage, as evidenced by one of his poems. Despite the fact that Ṣafī was praised more for his miniature paintings than for his literary talent, he was a popular poet up to the seventeenth century [1600-1699 CE]. Up to 8 of his poems were considered as zemīn, to which most 15th [1400-1499 CE] and 16th century [1500-1599 CE] poets wrote naẓīres.

Notes
The only extant copy of Naḳḳāş Ṣafī’s Dīvān is not in classic dīvān order, suggesting that he either did not have the time to complete it, or that it was assembled by someone else. The Dīvān includes laudatory poetry for a high number of government officials and important people of his time. Ṣafī made a special effort to use Turkish words in his rhymes.

Biographical notes
Şeyḫoğlu Muṣṭafā was a poet, courtier, and bureaucrat at the Germiyanid and Ottoman courts. He served as financial minister (defterdār) and head of the chancery (nişāncı) and at the Germiyanid court under the reigns of Meḥmed Bey (r. 1340-1361)محمد بك) and Süleymān Şāh (r. 1361-1381), before transferring to the Ottoman court under Bayezid I with the absorption of the Germiyanid principality by the Ottomans. We know nothing of his life after 1401 [1401 CE] except that he appears to have joined the court of the Ottoman prince Emir Süleymān following the fall and death of Bayezid I at Timur's hands. His contemporary and rival, the poet Aḥmedī, considered his verse inferior in style. The early sixteenth-century [1600-1699 CE] Ottoman biographer of poets Sehī Bey confused Şeyḫoğlu with the poet Şeyhī’s nephew Cemālī, a mistake that has continued to be repeated by both European and Turkish scholars. In some of his works Şeyḫoğlu Muṣṭafā uses the pen name İbn Şeyhī. Zeynep Korkmaz argues that Ṣadreddīn Şeyhoğlu, the author of a Turkish Marzubānnāme, is the same individual as Şeyḫoğlu Muṣṭafā.

Biographical notes
An Anatolian poet and physician, Şeyḫī was born in Kütahya, the capital of Germiyan (Turkey) region. One of his tutors was Aḥmedī, a famous Ottoman poet of the late 14th and 15th century [1350-1499 CE], during his youth. He went to Iran and majored in literature, Islamic mysticism and medicine. After his return to Kütahya, he joined in the court of Germiyan ruler Yākub II and he practiced as the court ophthalmologist. He got in touch with the Ottomans in the time of Emīr Süleymān Chelebi, and got the title reīs-i eṭıbbā (head of physicians) of the Ottomans when he cured Mehmed I. He is famous for his masnawis (e.g. Ḫüsrev ü Şîrîn and Ḫarnâme) and accepted as one of the founders of Ottoman literature. He was called as hüsrev-i şuarā, pīşterīn-i şuarā-yı Rūm or şeyhü’ş-şuarā (all means “head of poets”) in the sources. His tomb is in Dumlupınar, Kütahya.

Biographical notes
14th century [1300-1399 CE] Sufi poet. Not much is known about Şeyyād Ḥamza’s life. A tombstone in Akşehir probably belonging to his daughter Aṣlı Ḫātūn gives the date of 749 AH [1348 CE], which is also the date of composition of Şeyyād Ḥamza’s elegy. Some of the phrases in the poet’s Vefāt-ı Ḥażret-i İbrāhīm indicate that he may have also lost a son. Şeyyād Ḥamza probably lived in the region of Akşehir. The title of “şeyyād” in his name refers to a storyteller or performer of poetry. Ḥamza’s poetry indicates that he knew Arabic and Persian. His Mevlevī affiliation is evidenced by his reference to Sulṭān Valad at the end of his Aḥvāl-i Ḳıyāmet. In his poetry Şeyyād Ḥamza treats religious and Sufi topics, with a particular focus on the concept of death. His poetry displays his love for the Prophet and his criticism of current political figures. The earliest known example to the folk poetry genre of māni, located in Lāmiʿī’s Leṭāʾif, occurs in the context of an anecdote of a sexual nature involving Şeyyād Ḥamza and his disciples. The same work also includes a second anecdote which takes place between Naṣreddīn Ḫoca and Şeyyād Ḥamza, who is portrayed as a Sufi pretending to frequenty undertake spiritual ascension.

Biographical notes
Belonging to a Persian family probably from Shiraz settled in Anatolia during the reign of Orḫān Ġazī (724/1324-761/1359), Elvān-ı Şīrāzī’s work represents Ottoman poetry, in the formation period. His date of birth is estimated through the Gülşen-i Rāz’s muqaddima where he states that he wrote the work when he was 50 years old and he gives the spring of 829 AH [1426 CE] as the corresponding date. His date of death remains unknown. He is sometimes mentioned as “Şeyḫ” Elvān-ı Şīrāzī. Although Laṭīfī (d. 990/1582) ties him to Ḥacı Bayrām-ı Velī (d. 833/1430), there isn’t enough evidence that he belongs in the sect, in the Bayrāmī literature.
