Biographical notes
Belonging to a Persian family probably from Shiraz settled in Anatolia during the reign of Orḫān Ġazī (724/1324-761/1359), Elvān-ı Şīrāzī’s work represents Ottoman poetry, in the formation period. His date of birth is estimated through the Gülşen-i Rāz’s muqaddima where he states that he wrote the work when he was 50 years old and he gives the spring of 829 AH [1426 CE] as the corresponding date. His date of death remains unknown. He is sometimes mentioned as “Şeyḫ” Elvān-ı Şīrāzī. Although Laṭīfī (d. 990/1582) ties him to Ḥacı Bayrām-ı Velī (d. 833/1430), there isn’t enough evidence that he belongs in the sect, in the Bayrāmī literature.

Gülşen-i Rāz
Elvān-ı Şīrāzī translated Maḥmūd Shabistarī (d. 720/1320)'s work by the same name from Persian into Turkish in 829 at the behest of Şeyḫüˈl-İslām Mollā Fenārī and dedicated his work to Murād II (824/1421-855/1451). Şīrāzī tripled the size of the original work by making some additions and explanations. The work is about the principles of the wahdat al-wujūd belief. Şīrāzī made further explanations by references from hadiths and ayats. This is the only work known byElvān-ı Şīrāzī. Show more
