Turkish mystic poet and Ḫalvetī shaykh, who is the only Anatolian Safavid poet with an extant dīvān prior to the politicization and Shî’itization of the order. His real name is İsmā‘il, سماعیل His pen figures as" Kemāl Ümmī" in all historical sources but is used as both " Kemāl Ümmī" and " Ümmī Kemāl" in his Dīvān (دیوان), tough the first form hagiography. Biographical sources state that Kemāl Ümmī was born and raised in Karaman (Turkey), in the town of Lārende. The Sālnāme of Bolu (Turkey), however, mentions that he was from Bukhara (Uzbekistan). The place of origin of Khurāsān (Iran) which appears in his hagiography composed by a certain Dervīş ‘Aḥmed can be a generic place name indicating his dervish circle and temperament. According to his hagiography, the poet lived in Bolu (Turkey) for a long time and established a lodge in a rural area in the vicinity of the city. He had three sons. His son Sinān was a sober, educated man who criticized his father for being "ümmī". His son Cemāl was an ecstatic who was unjustly executed by the sultan of the period. Oral tradition in Bolu (Turkey) also states that he had a sister named Şehribān, together with whom he had moved from Khurāsān (Iran) to the village of Çal in the area of Dörtdīvān, Bolu. According to information in the Bolu Şer‘iyye Sicilleri, Kemāl Ümmī was married, had children and his lineage continued in Tekke Köyü, Dörtdīvān, Bolu and more recently in Gerede, Bolu. In a fermān sūreti dated1117 AH [1705 CE] , written to the qāḍīs of Bolu (Turkey) and Dörtdīvān, Bolu, it is mentioned that some previleges had been granted to his descendants since the time of Sulṭān Süleymān. Kemāl Ümmī's choice of pen name indicates that he did not have an official education. His Dīvān (دیوان) includes a mers̱iye for his master Şeyḫ Ḥamīdüddīn Aḳsarāyī or with his better known name Somuncu Baba (d. 1412), who was also the master of Ḥacı Bayrām Velī (d.1430). It also includes a mers̱iye and a medḥiye for Şeyḫ ‘Alī Erdebīlī (d. 1429), the grandson of Ṣafiyyü’d-dīn Erdebīlī (d.1334). The connection between Kemāl Ümmī and Şeyḫ ‘Alī Erdebīlī (d. 1429) is thus established through his master Ḥamīdüddīn Aḳsarāyī , who visited Şeyḫ ‘Alī Erdebīlī (d. 1429) and stayed with him for some time. Parts of Kemāl Ümmī's Dīvān suggests that he may also have done the same. We learn from Kemāl Ümmī's mers̱iye that he became the disciple of Muẓafferü’d-dīn Lārendī, one of his master's ḫalīfes, after the death of his master. Among the people in Kemāl Ümmī's circle were Ḥacı Bayrām Velī (d.1430), presented by his hagiography as his close friend, and his two disciples Aḳçavaḳlı Ṣarı Müderris and Yaġlucalı ‘Alī Kevkeb Ḳutbu’d-dīn. According to his hagiography, the followers of Kemāl Ümmī were called “Kemāllü”. He did not consider himself a master and did not leave any successors. His hagiography presents him as the inventor of ẕikr from the throat, also called ḳoyun ẕikri or bıçḳı ẕikri. Reference is also made to Kemāl Ümmī in Vilāyetnāme-i Sulṭān Şücā‘ü’d-dīn (ولایتنامۀ سلطان شوجاع الدین) , where along with Seyyid Nesīmī and Ḳayġusuz Abdāl he travels to Seyitġāzī to see Sulṭān Şücā‘. His disrespect towards Sulṭān Şücā‘'s leads to Sulṭān Şücā‘'s prophecy that he will be hanged. This account is taken up by some of the biographical sources where it is stated that he was executed. Kemāl Ümmī's date of death appears as 880 AH [1475 CE] in Ottoman sources. His grave is situated in the village named Işıklar (with the old name of Tekke in the area of Sazak 39 km. southeast of Bolu (Turkey). He also has various maḳām in places such as Karaman (Turkey), Manisa (Turkey), Niğde (Turkey).

Biographical notes
Naḳḳāş Ṣafī was a court poet from Bursa, who lived during the reigns of Meḥmed I, and Murād II. He probably came to know Murād II during the sultan’s time in Bursa. While a companion to Murād II, Naḳḳāş Ṣafī was falsely accused and thrown in prison. He obtained the help of military judge Veliyyüddīn b. İlyās, the father of Aḥmed Paşa (d. 902/1496-97). Soon after being released from prison, he died in Edirne, where he was buried. The information on Naḳḳāş Ṣafī figuring in the bibliographical dictionaries is corraborated by references in his poetry. Although Ṣafī wrote laudatory poetry for a high number of officials, he had difficulty finding patronage, as evidenced by one of his poems. Despite the fact that Ṣafī was praised more for his miniature paintings than for his literary talent, he was a popular poet up to the seventeenth century [1600-1699 CE]. Up to 8 of his poems were considered as zemīn, to which most 15th [1400-1499 CE] and 16th century [1500-1599 CE] poets wrote naẓīres.

Notes
The only extant copy of Naḳḳāş Ṣafī’s Dīvān is not in classic dīvān order, suggesting that he either did not have the time to complete it, or that it was assembled by someone else. The Dīvān includes laudatory poetry for a high number of government officials and important people of his time. Ṣafī made a special effort to use Turkish words in his rhymes.

Biographical notes
A Turkmen abdāl dervish renowned for his intoxication. He is probably from the village of Asbust near Tabriz. He is the disciple and son-in-law of Awḥad al-Dīn Kirmānī (d.635/1238) and the spiritual teacher of Aḫī Evrān (d. during the reign of Orḫān Ġāzī. In his hagiography entitled Hıżır-nāme, Muḥyiddīn states that Aḥmed Faḳīh is one of the first aḫi members in Anatolia and names him “ḳutbu’d-dīn” (the pole of religion). This title is also used by Yūnus Emre (d. 1320), who refers to Aḥmed Faḳīh in his poetry. Aḥmed Faḳīh’s grave is in the musoleum next to the Ḫoca Faḳīh Mescidi to the west of Konya. On the inscription here, Aḥmed Faḳīh is referred to as “melikü’l-abdāl seyyidü’l-mecẕūbīn ḳutbu’ş-şarḳ ve’l-ġarb (the prince of the abdāl, the head of the intoxicated, the pole of the east and west).” He has a second grave in Asbust, which is more likely to be a visiting site (maḳām).

Biographical notes
Believed to have come to Konya from Khurāsān, this Aḥmed Faḳīh is known to be a disciple to Bahāʾ al-Dīn Walad (d. 628/1231), Jalāl al-dīn Rūmī’s (d.672/1273) father. Aflākī devotes a large section to him in his Manāqib al-‘ārifīn, where he is portrayed as an intoxicated figure who performed miracles.

The biographical dictionary of Sehī Bey contains an entry on this Aḥmed Faḳīh, who is said to have sayings in Turkish, Persian and Arabic, as well as splendid ghazals. His grandson Seyyid Aḥmed built a lodge in Karaman in his name, as well as in the names of his son Seyyid İbrāhīm ‘Arab and his father Seyyid Aḥmed.

Unlike the two Aḥmed Faḳīh who lived in the thirteenth century [1200-1299 CE], this Aḥmed Faḳīh was a person who abided by religious law and was married with children. He is the author of Kitābu Evṣāfı Mesācidi’ş-Şerīfe. From this work we understand that he travelled to Mecca, Medina, Damascus and Jerusalem. It is also more likely for this Aḥmed Faḳīh to be the author of Çarḫ-nāme, as opposed to the two wandering extatic dervishes who lived in the thirteenth century [1200-1299 CE]. The language of the work also points to the late fourteenth [1300-1399 CE] and early fifteenth [1400-1499 CE] centuries. Thus, it is not possible to claim that Aḥmed Faḳīh was the first author to produce works in Anatolian Turkish and that Çarḫ-nāme is the first of such works.

Notes
A ḳasīde of 83 couplets which figures in the Cāmi‘ü’n-naẓā’ir compiled by Egridirli Ḥacı Kemāl in 918 AH [1512 CE]. According to the list at the end of the manuscript, the poem should be 100 couplets long, thus indicating that the folio containing the last 17 couplets was lost. Çarḫ-nāme is a didactic work on the importance of worship, moral perfection, preparation for one’s afterlife and disattachment to this fleeting world full of vices.

Biographical notes
Court poet of Murād II, who is famous for his ḳaṣīde with the rhyme of “güneş,” presented to Murād II. Aḥmed Paşa wrote a naẓīre to this poem. ‘Aṭā’ī is also known for initiating the use of proverbs in ġazels and being one of the few Anatolian poets to use the genre of ṭuyuġ. Born in Edirne, ‘Aṭā’ī is the son of the Ottoman vizier and architect Ḫacı ‘İvaż Paşa (d. 831/1428). According to Laṭīfī, he is also Süleyman Çelebi’s brother; yet this cannot be corroborated by evidence. ‘Aṭā’ī may have had a Dīvān, but there is no extant copy. His poems have survived in famous naẓīre collections. He also has poems in Persian. He makes reference to Kamāl Khudjandī (d. 803/1400-1) in one of his poems. ‘Aṭā’ī made a special effort to use Turkish elements in court poetry. He was influenced by the poetry of Şeyḫī (d. 832/1429). He died at a young age in Bursa, where he is buried.

Biographical notes
The first known representative of secular love poetry in Anatolian Turkish literature. In his only extant ḳasīde, Ḫoca Dehhānī states that he came to Anatolia from Khorassān with the hope of returning there some day. According to secondary studies, Ḫoca Dehhānī came to Anatolia during the reign of either ‘Alā al-dīn Keyḳubād III (697/1298-701/1302) or ‘Alā al-dīn Keyḳubād I (618/1220-634/1237). He spent time in the sultan’s palace and was commissioned to write a Seljuk Şeh-nāme. According to Şikārī’s Kitāb-ı Tevārīḫ-i Ḳaramāniyye, this nonextant Persian work consisted of 20,000 couplets. Some scholars, on the other hand, assert that the author of the mentioned work was in fact Ḳāni‘ī-i Ṭūsī (d. after 672/1273). Certain clues in Dehhānī’s poetry suggest that he may have been alive in 1361. The presence of his poetry in important fifteenth and sixteenth century mecmū‘as, the selection of one of his poems to Şeyḫoġlı (d. 817/1414?)’s Kenzü’l-Küberā as well as the reference to him in Ḥaṭīboġlı Muḥammed (d. after 838/1435)'s Baḥru’l-ḥaḳā’iḳ all suggest that Dehhānī had notable fame during and after his lifetime. What distinguished Dehhānī from his contemporaries was the fact that unlike most of them, he did not focus on religious or Sufi subjects in his poems. Instead, his poems treated topics such as the pleasures and sufferings of profane love, the spring season, and joyful gatherings where alcohol is served. Dehhānī’s poems are considered to be the first examples to the subsequent influence of classical Persian poetry on Ottoman literature.

Biographical notes
Author of a verse collection which includes several freely translated passages from Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī’s Mas̱navī as well as its commentaries. He may have been from Kayseri, a Mavlavī and a scribe. He wrote naẓīres for the poetry of ʿĀşıḳ Paşa, Nesīmī and Aḥmedī, who reciprocated. Şeyyād Ḥamza also wrote naẓīres for the poetry of İbrāhīm Beg.

The majority of the poems in İbrāhīm Beg’s verse collection are short mes̱nevīs, resulting in the hesitation of researchers in naming it Dīvān. These short mes̱nevīs include verses in praise of Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī, translations from ten stories in the Mas̱navī, and Sufi commentaries of some of the stories. The ten stories include smaller stories and some of these are not found in the Mas̱navī. According to the master’s thesis by Sağlam, the mes̱nevīs consist of a total of 2012 couplets. The total number of couplets for poetry which is not in mes̱nevī form is 1396. İbrāhīm Beg’s verse collection includes a naʿt of 275 couplets narrating the ascension of the prophet.

Biographical notes
One of the first female poets of Ottoman classical poetry. Her name may have been Zeynünnisā or Zübeyde. She was probably from Amasya and took part in this town’s poetry scene. She was educated by her father Meḥmed Çelebi, who served as qadi or magistrate in Amasya. In some sources his name appears as Belā’ī Çelebi. Zeyneb Ḫātūn knew Arabic and Persian. She was also knowledgeable in music and composed both lyrics and melodies. She may have been married to a qadi named İsḥāḳ Fehmī Çelebi, after which she may have stopped attending poetry gatherings. She died in Amasya. The location of her tomb is unknown.

According to the sources, Zeyneb Ḫātūn had a no longer extant Dīvān which she presented to Meḥmed II. It included poetry in Turkish, Persian, and Arabic. Some of Zeyneb Ḫātūn’s Turkish poetry has come down to us via poetry collections and biographical dictionaries. Zeyneb Ḫātūn may have had poetry collaborations and exchanges with Mihrī Ḫātūn (d. after 917/1512)

14th century [1300-1399 CE] Sufi poet. Not much is known about Şeyyād Ḥamza’s life. A tombstone in Akşehir probably belonging to his daughter Aṣlı Ḫātūn gives the date of 749 AH [1348 CE], which is also the date of composition of Şeyyād Ḥamza’s elegy. Some of the phrases in the poet’s Vefāt-ı Ḥażret-i İbrāhīm indicate that he may have also lost a son. Şeyyād Ḥamza probably lived in the region of Akşehir. The title of “şeyyād” in his name refers to a storyteller or performer of poetry. Ḥamza’s poetry indicates that he knew Arabic and Persian. His Mevlevī affiliation is evidenced by his reference to Sulṭān Valad at the end of his Aḥvāl-i Ḳıyāmet. In his poetry Şeyyād Ḥamza treats religious and Sufi topics, with a particular focus on the concept of death. His poetry displays his love for the Prophet and his criticism of current political figures. The earliest known example to the folk poetry genre of māni, located in Lāmiʿī’s Leṭāʾif, occurs in the context of an anecdote of a sexual nature involving Şeyyād Ḥamza and his disciples. The same work also includes a second anecdote which takes place between Naṣreddīn Ḫoca and Şeyyād Ḥamza, who is portrayed as a Sufi pretending to frequenty undertake spiritual ascension.
