- Biographical notes
- The life and career of Davud-i Kayseri, one of mediaeval Anatolia’s major thinkers in the Ibn ‘Arabi's tradition, is shrouded in obscurity. His nisba indicates that he was born in Kayseri (Turkey), according to the conventional dating around 1260 [1260 CE] (see (Bayraktar, Mehmet. La Philosophie Mystique Chez Dawud De Kayserî. Ankara: 1990.), (Bayraktar, Mehmet. "Davud-i Kayseri." TDVİA. IX 1995: 33-35.), (Bayraktar, Mehmet. Dâvûd el-Kayserî. Istanbul: Kurtuba Kitap, 2009.)), although this seems too early. He is also called by Taşköprüzade ( (Taşköprüzade, ‘Isām al-Dīn Aḥmad. al-Shaqā’iq al-Nu‘māniyya fi ‘ulamā’ al-Dawla al-‘Uthmāniyya. Edited by Ṭabaṭabā’ī Bihbahānī, Sayyid Muḥammad. Tehran: 1389., pp. 9)) ‘Dā’ūd al-Qayṣari al-Qaramānī, داود القيصري القراماني’, indicating an association with Karaman İli (Turkey). Taşköprüzade tells us that he studied tafsir, hadith and usul in Egypt, and that the Ottoman sultan Orhan built the first madrasa in the Ottoman state at İznik (Turkey) for him, where he taught and composed his works. This story has become well established in the modern scholarly literature, but may be profoundly misleading. Taşköprüzade says nothing of Davud-i Kayseri’s sojourn at Sawa (Iran) where we know he received Ilkhanid patronage; conversely, none of the extant works by Davud indicate they were composed in the Ottoman lands, and there is no contemporary evidence he went anywhere near İznik (Turkey). The earliest reference to the association with İznik (Turkey) comes from Aşıkpasazade’s 15th century history, which briefly mentions that Orhan gave the madrasa he built in İznik to Davud ( (Pasazade, Aşık. Osmanogulları’nın Tarihi. Edited by Yavuz, Kemal and M.A. Yekta Saraç. Istanbul: 2003., pp. 33)). Aşıkpasazade and Oruç also mention that Davud was one of the ulema of Orhan Gazi’s age (Orhan Gazi zamanında ulemadan); that, however, is no more than evidence they were contemporaries ( (Pasazade, Aşık. Osmanogulları’nın Tarihi. Edited by Yavuz, Kemal and M.A. Yekta Saraç. Istanbul: 2003., pp. 170); (Oruç Beğ, . Oruç Beğ Tarihi. Edited by Öztürk, Necdet. Istanbul: 2007., pp. 22)). The story of Davud’s Ottoman association may well be a 15th century [1400-1499 CE] invention to associate one of Anatolia’s most famous scholars with the Ottoman dynasty. According to the research of Ihsan Fazlıoğlu (see (Fazlioglu_1998)), Davud-i Kayseri studied with the mathemitician Ibn Sartāq of Maragha, who taught in the Nizamiyye madrasa in Niksar (Turkey). Fazlıoğlu cites two works by Ibn Sartāq copied by Davud-i Kayseri in Niksar in the early 14th c. [1300-1350 CE] (MS Cairo University 23209/1, Risālat al-uṣūl al-aṣīliyya fi’l-handasa, رسالة الاصول الاصيلية في الهندسة copied in 714 AH [1314-1315 CE]; MS Cairo University 23209/2, Kitab al-Ikmal al-aṣlī fi’l-handasa, كتاب الاكمال الاصيلي في الهندسة , copied in Rabi‘ I 715 [1315 CE]). Sometime later, we find Davud in Iran, based in Sawa; it was most likely here that he made the acquaintance of the famous Sufi ‘Abd al-Razzāq Kāshānī (d. c.1330), as he tells us in the introduction to his Maṭla‘ Khuṣūṣ (see (el-Kayseri, Davud and Mehmet Bayraktar. Er-Resail. Kayseri: Kayseri Büyükşehir Belediyesi, 1997., pp. 25)). He appears to have been resident in Iran around 1330 [1330 CE], where his major patron was the Ilkhanid vizier Ghiyāth al-Dīn Muḥammad b. Rashīd al-Dīn, as is clearly attested in several of his works. Another work was dedicated to ‘Abd al-Kāfī b. ‘Abdallāh al-Tabrīzī, عبد الکافی بن عبد الله التبریزی. A number of Davud’s other patrons have not yet been identified. Future research must concentrate in situating Davud more firmly in the Ilkhanid intellectual context. As the circulation of his manuscripts indicates, Davud was more famous to contemporaries for his commentaries on Ibn ‘Arabi’s Fuṣūṣ al-Ḥikam, فصوص الحكم and Ibn Farid’s mystical poems than for his original works. All his known works are in Arabic.

- Biographical notes
- One of the most influential and prolific Sufi thinkers of medieval times, Ibn al-ʿArabī was born in the Spanish region of Murcia on 27 Ramaḍān 560 [1165 CE]. He moved to Seville when he was eight years old and began his formal education in that city. From a young age, Ibn al-ʿArabī became part of the local government, acting as kātib to various governors. It is related that during an illness, he had a vision that made him realise that he has been leaving in ignorance (Jāhiliyya) until that moment and had a mystical awakening that would mark the rest of his life. In search of mystical knowledge, he sought the company of different Sufi Shaykhs, travelling for the next 10 years across the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. He stayed for some time in Tunis, Fez, Cordova where he began to write some of his early works before going to Cairo and then to Jerusalem around the year 598 AH [1202 CE] from where he began his pilgrimage to Mecca. While om ḥajj, he met Majd al-Dīn Isḥāq (the father of Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī) and a group of Sufis and Ibn Arabi decided to join them in their trip back to Syria and Anatolia. He arrived in Malatya around 601 AH [1205 CE], at a time when ʿIzz al-Dīn Kaykāvūs I has been restored as the Sultan of Rum. Majd al-Dīn Isḥāq was invited by the Sultan to the court, where he came accompanied by Ibn al-ʿArabī, who offered advice to the Sultan and both were honoured at the court. Ibn al-ʿArabī resumed his travels again, leaving Anatolia to visit Baghdad and Aleppo and return to Anatolia around 1215 [1215 CE] when he completed the commentary to his Tarjumān al-as̲h̲wāq in between Aksaray and Sivas and then settled for some time in Malatya where he married and have a son. At some point before 1230 [1230 CE], he left Anatolia and re-settled in Damascus under the protection of the Ibn Zakī family of qāḍīs and the Ayyubid court. He died in 1240 [1240 CE] and his body was buried in the mount Qāsiyūn, north of Damascus. Ibn al-ʿArabī is one of the most influential Sufi authors in Anatolia especially die to the diffusion of his idea made by his disciple Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī. Other commentators on Ibn al-ʿArabī’s works such as Dāwūd al-Ḳayṣarī (d. 751/1350) or Ḳuṭb al-Dīn al-Izniḳī also helped to spread his philosophy in the region.

- Biographical notes
- He was born in the town of Kumijān (Iran), not far from the city of Hamadan, apparently in 610 [1213-1214 CE]. In his youth he studied the Qur’ān, Hadith and Islamic theology (kalam). However, he is better known for his literary skills as a Sufi poet that travelled extensively from Pakistan to Anatolia during his lifetime. He began teaching in his native Hamadan (Iran) when he met a group of Qalandar dervishes and abandoned his activities to travel with them all the way to Multān (Pakistan) in the year 1230 [1230 CE]. It was in that city where he allegedly became a disciple of the Sufi master Bahāʼ al-Dīn Zakariyyā, 1170?-1262? , بهاء الدين زكريا, who at the time was the leader of the Suhrawardīyah Sufi Order. In fact, ʻIrāqī seems to have married the shaykh’s daughter and had a son with her named Kabīr al-Dīn, d. after 1289, کبیر الدین. Under the auspice of Bahāʼ al-Dīn Zakariyyā, 1170?-1262? , ʻIrāqī stayed in Multān (Pakistan) for 17 years dedicated to writing poetry. After the dead of the Bahāʼ al-Dīn Zakariyyā, 1170?-1262? in 1268 [1268 CE], he seems to have lost the support of the members of the order and left Multān (Pakistan) by sea at the age of 24. First he went to Arabia where he performed hajj and then all the way to Anatolia, where he joined Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, -1273 or 1274 in Konya (Turkey) and then became close to Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī, Maulana, 1207-1273 and his followers. He was under the protection and patronage of Muʻīn al-Dı̄n Sulaymān, Parwānā, -1277 and Shams al-Dīn Juwaynī, d. 1285 until these two were accused of treason against the Mongols and the later was executed in 1277 [1277 CE]. The fall of his patron seems to have been behind the escape of Iraqi to Sinop and from there to Egypt, where he found refuge under the Mamluk Sultan Baybars al-Manṣūrī, approximately 1245-1325. He gained a high status at the court of the Mamluks and then moved from Egyptto Damascus where he re-joined his son (who has stayed in Multan after Iraqi’s departure). He fell ill shortly after his arrival in Syria and died on 8 Dhu al-Qa'dah 688 [1289 CE] at the age of 78.

- Notes
- The most famous work of ʻIrāqī. This work deals mostly with different aspects of Sufism, composed mixing prose and verse and divided in 28 chapters. The work appears to be highly influenced by the work of authors such as Ghazzālī,1058-1111 and Ibn al-ʻArabī,1165-1240 . The work was composed in Anatolia and allegedly shown to Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, -1273 or 1274, who praised its quality. Sara Ethel Wolper has suggested that the manuscript Şehid Ali Paşa_2703, ff. 17-35, which she wrongly quotes as Süleymaniye 2703, was dedicated to the Muʻīn al-Dı̄n Sulaymān, Parwānā, -1277 ( (Wolper, Ethel Sara. Cities and Saints. Sufism and the Transformation of Urban Space in Medieval Anatolia. University Park, Pennsylvania: The Pennsylvania State University Press, 2004., pp. 111). However, after re-examining the manuscript, we were not able to find any reference to Muʻīn al-Dı̄n Sulaymān in the text.
- The work was composed not after 1274 [-1274 CE]
- A commentary on this work was done by Turkah Iṣfahānī, ʻAlī ibn Muḥammad, 1368 or 9-1431 or 2 in 815 AH [1412-1413 CE] entitled z̤ū al-lamaʻāt (ضو اللمعات). See for example British Library add. 16832

- ʿAbd al-Laṭīf al-Qudsī was born in Jerusalem in 786 AH [1384 CE], where he spent most of his life. After studying at the madrasah, al-Qudsī joined Sufism and became a disciple of Zayn al-Dīn Ḥāfī, the founder of the path of Zayniyyah in Khorasan. Upon obtaining his licence, he returned to Jerusalem, after which he spent three years in Asia Minor, in the 830s [1426-1435 CE]. His fame and popularity led Murād II to wish to visit him, which he refused. After returning to Jerusalem, al-Qudsī lived in Cairo for a period, followed by a brief stay in Damascus. His second travel to Asia Minor took place in 851 AH [1448 CE]. al-Qudsī stayed at the lodge of Ṣadr al-Dīn Qūnawī in Konya until 855 AH [1451 CE], when he moved to Bursa, where the Zayniyyah already had a significant following. Al-Qudsī died in Bursa in 856 AH [1452 CE]. His tomb is located in this city in a lodge complex built by one of his disciples after his death. ʿAbd al-Laṭīf al-Qudsī is credited with bringing the Zayniyyah path to Asia Minor. His Sufi thought resembles that of his master Zayn al-Dīn Ḥāfī, marked by a reserved language regarding the oneness of being (waḥdat al-wujūd) and a strict importance put on observing the sharīʿah. His disciples include Tāceddīn İbrāhīm Ḳaramānī, Şeyḫ Vefā (Muṣliḥuddīn Muṣṭafā), and ʿAşıḳpaşazāde. Some copies of al-Qudsī’s works copied by Şeyḫ Vefā (d. 896/1491) have survived to our day.

- Notes
- A work on the Sufi journey, stations and concepts, with a focus on union with God. Completed in 833 AH [1430 CE], it is probably one of al-Qudsī’s first works, to which he frequently refers in his other works. The author’s copy is located at the Istanbul University Library.
