- Biographical notes
- He was born in Anatolia at an uncertain date. His father was Majd al-Dīn Ishāq b. 'Alī b. Yūsuf al-Qūnawī, مجد الدین بن علی بن یوسف القوتوی, an aristocrat closely connected to the Seljuq court, where he acted as an advisor to different rulers and was especially close to Sultan Kaykhusraw I and his successor İzzeddin Keykâvus I, Sultan of the Seljuks, -1220. Majd al-Dīn was also highly recognised in religious circles in Konya, where he made a name for himself as a Sufi master and possibly a facilitator, in the name of the Caliph, to the foundation futuwwa (chivalric) orders in Anatolia (ref Addas_1993). Although he spent most of his life in Anatolia, Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī travelled in extensively to Damascus and Cairo and received religious education from Aḥwad al-Din Kirmani and especially from Ibn al-ʿArabī, with whom he studied in Syria. He returned to Anatolia and settled in Konya in the 1250s [1249-1260 CE], where he became a close companion of Jalal al-Din Rumi. In Konya he was awarded a large Zawiya for himself and received generous patronage from the Seljuq court and the Parvana Mu’yin al-Din Sulayman. Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī (1207-1274) is considered the stepson, foremost disciple, spiritual heir and main interpreter of the great Ṣūfī visionary, Ibn al-ʿArabī. He wrote more than two dozen works systematizing and explicating Ibn al-ʿArabī’s thought and works, focusing on most essential teachings of his master. His al-Fukūk, a commentary on Ibn al-ʿArabī’s work on prophetology, al-Fuṣūṣ al-ḥikam (Bezels of Wisdom), provides an extensive exposition of the doctrine which later came to be known as waḥdat al-wujūd (the unity of being). His Miftaḥ al-ghayb has been considered his key work and spawned nine commentaries, including one dedicated to Mehmed II. He likewise was an authority on the Sufi poetry of Ibn al-Fāriḍ, and attempted to harmonize the intellectual expression of Sufism with Peripatetic philosophy.

- Biographical notes
- Burhaneddin was born into a scholarly family in Kayseri; on his mother’s side he claimed kinship to the Seljuk dynasty. After studying in Syria and Egypt he returned to Anatolia in 1365 [1365 CE], entering the service of the ruler of Kayseri, the Eretnid Mehmet Beg, and was in 780 AH [1378 CE]appointed vizier toMehmet Beg’s successor Alaeddin Ali Beg. In 783 AH [1381 CE], he proclaimed himself ruler, with Sivas as his capital. His rule was spent in frequent wars with the Ottomans and Timur, 1336-1405 , during which time he also pursued his literary activities and composed the two Arabic prose works which have come done to us. We are uniquely well informed about his rule owing to the detailed panegyric biography by his courtier ‘Aziz b. Ardashir Astarabadi . However, he is best known as one of the earliest Turkish poets to try to emulate the Persian ghazal, even if his Dīvān evidently had a limited circulation.
