ʿIşḳ-nāme
A mes̱nevī which narrates the love story between prince Ferruḥ and Hümā, a Khitay princess. Some of the motifs are: the lovers fall in love with each other in a dream; Hümā disguises herself as a man and rules a country; other princes are in love with Hümā and fight to obtain her hand in marriage. The love story between Ferruḥ's helper Ḫürrem and his lover Dil-güşā constitues a second storyline. The work contains thirty ghazals spoken through the mouths of Ferruḥ and Hümā. Together with these, the number of couplets for the work adds up to 8702. In the beginning of the work, Muḥammed praises Emīr Süleymān and Ḥamza Çelebi, Ottoman vizier who was a vice-gerent (nāʾib) in Sivas at the time. Muḥammed states that in Egpyt, he came across the manuscript of a work in a language which he refers to as "Tatar dili" and "olgay bolgay." Secondary sources identify this language as Kipchak. Muḥammed does not clearly state the name of his work, which is a translation from this Kipchak original. Show more
