Maḳtel-i Ḥüseyn
A mes̱ nevī narrating the events surrounding the death of Ḥusayn ibn ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib and the battle of Karbala. It is the first of its kind in Anatolian Turkish. The work is composed in formal meter (ʿarūż) and consists of 3313 couplets. Its fullest extant manuscript contains 3174 couplets. It is arranged in 10 meclis (gatherings), to be recited in the first 10 days of the month of Muharram. There seem to be at least two versions of the same text, both under the name of Şāẕī. One may be a revision of the other. Şāẕī’s Maḳtel-i Ḥüseyn has been erroneously attributed to Yūsuf-ı Meddāḥ by various scholars. The author’s name appears as simply meddāḥ (storyteller) in some of the manuscripts, indicating that the work was part of the common repertoire , of storytellers at the time. Catalogues attribute Şāẕī’s Maḳtel-i Ḥüseyn to a number of authors. A study of all Maḳtel-i Hüseyn manuscripts will reveal more copies of Şāẕī’s work. Show more
