- Biographical notes
- A Turkish poet, author and translator who lived in the second half of the 14th century [1350-1399 CE]. Most of the information about his life comes from the prefaces written in the works he has authored and translated (especially ). He was apparently born blind (ḍarīr) in the Anatolian city of Erzurum (Turkey) where he studied. It was probably in his city of birth where he composed his version of the classic Yūsuf va Zulaykhā (يوسف و زليخا), which is important as an early example of old Anatolian Turkish. In 779 AH [1377 CE], he left for Egypt after some political instability arose in Erzurum (Turkey). He won the sympathy of the young Sultan al-Manṣūr ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn ʿAlī, Sultan of Egypt, r. 1376–1382 and especially of the atabeg and future sultan Barqūq, Sultan of Egypt, 1340 or 1341-1399. In Egypt he begun the translation of the Sīrat al-Nabī (سيرة النبي) based on the version by Bakrī , Abū al-Ḥasan ibn ʻAbd Allāh of the classic work by the same title of Muḥammad Ibn Isḥāq, -approximately 768. This work begun to be prepared by order of al-Manṣūr ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn ʿAlī, Sultan of Egypt, r. 1376–1382 but because of the removal of the Sultan it was presented in 790 AH [1388 CE] to the new ruler Barqūq, Sultan of Egypt, 1340 or 1341-1399. Musṭafá Ḍarīr b. Yūsuf b. ‘Umar Erzurūmī moved with his family to Alexandria (Egypt) before embarking back to Anatolia to settle for four years in Karaman. For unknown reasons he left the city and travelled to Aleppo (Syria) where he was in 796 AH [1393 CE] to present his work Futūḥ al-shām (فتوح الشام) to the amir of the city. It has been suggested that his work Yüz Hadis ve Yüz Hikâye was also composed in Aleppo (Syria) at the request of Emir Çolpan. All his works contain pieces of poetry that are believed to be of his own authorship. His date of death is unknown and there is no information about his life in Syria after 796 AH [1393 CE].
