Title
Terceme-i Müfredāt-ı İbn Bayṭar
ترجمهء مفردات ابن بيطار
Notes
The second oldest known medical work in Anatolian Turkish, the Terceme-i Müfredāt-ı İbn Bayṭar claims to be a translation of Ibn Bayṭar (ابن بيطار المالقي)'s al-Jāmiʿ li-mufradāt al-adwiya wa’l-aghdhiya (الجامع لمفردات الادوية والاغذية) (Compendium of Simple Drugs and Foods) produced on the orders of the Aydınid ruler Umūr Bey (Beg) (1340-1348). Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn Abū Muḥammad (ضياء الدين ابو محمد), known as Ibn al-Bayṭār al-Mālaqī (1190-1248) (ابن بيطار المالقي) was a pharmacologist from Andalusia and the student of the famous Muslim botanist al-Nabatī (النبتي). In 1224 [1224 CE], he settled in Cairo where he was appointed as chief botanist and herbalist by the Ayyubid ruler al-Malik al-Kāmil (r. 615- 635/1218-1238) (الملك الكامل). Composed in 1224 [1224 CE], Ibn Bayṭar’s al-Jāmiʿ li-mufradāt al-adwiya wa’l-aghdhiya (الجامع لمفردات الادوية والاغذية) is an alphabetically organized encyclopedia of around 1400 animal, vegetable and mineral medicines based on some 150 authorities as well as the author's own observations. Ibn Bayṭar's al-Jāmiʿ also provides technical equivalents between Arabic, Persian, Berber, Greek, Latin, and Romance languages. Since the Turkish translation remains unstudied, it is an open question as to how faitful a translation it is. There are at least 20 manuscript copies of the work, making it one of the most copied text to come out of the Aydınid court. The work place of composition is Aydınid realm, western Anatolia (Aegean region of Anatolia).
