This Turkish verse work composed in a folksy Old Anatolian Turkish style,
consists of a fictional account of the conquest of a castle attributed to the great
early Islamic commander, Khālid ibn
al-Walīd (d. 21/642), خالد ابن
الوليد, a companion of the Prophet
Muḥammad of the Quraysh tribe who served as the commander of the forces
of Medina and was renowed for his
bravery and military successes over the Byzantines and Sasanians, as well as his
important role in the Riddah Wars. This fortress may refer to that of Dawmat
al-Jandal, a vibrant trading center in Arabia. The Battle of Dawmat al-Jandal was
fought in 12/633 between the Muslims led by Khālid ibn
Walīd, خالد ابن الوليد and the
Christian Arab Kalb tribe. Although the work’s composition date is unknown, it was
probably written sometime in the 14th century. Show more
