Biographical notes
Famous Persian musician and musical theoretician. His father’s name was Ghiyāth al-dīn (Jamāl al-Dīn) Ghaybī. He was born in Maragha around the middle of the 14th century [1300-1399 CE]. He held posts at the Jalāʾirid and Tīmūrid courts respectively. His most important work is the Jāmīʿ al-Alḥān, written in 808 AH [1405 CE] and revised in 816 AH [1413 CE]. His son ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz [Local ID], who is the author of a musical treatise named the Naḳāwat al-Adwār, dedicated the work to Mehmed II. Murād II donated a village to ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz in 1421. Al-Marāghī’s work named the Maḳāṣid al-Alḥān, dedicated to Murād II in the authograph copy of a revised version, may have been sent by al-Marāghī to the Ottoman court to reinforce his son’s position there. The Mecmūʿa-i Güfte (collection of lyrics) dated 1422 [1422 CE] and collected upon the demand of Murād II includes approximately 65 compositions by al-Marāghī. Al-Marāghī died in Herat in 838 AH [1435 CE].
