- Biographical notes
- In some sources and mss he is also given the laqab al-Urmawī (الارموي); however there is no evidence of any connection with Urūmīyah (Iran) or Iran, and most probably the laqab derives from his association with Sirāj al-Dīn al-Urmawī. His father’s name is also recorded by some sources as ‘Abd al-Raḥīm. Born in India near Delhi in 644 AH [1246 CE], he travelled to Yemen, Mecca and Egypt for study and the hajj. After his sojourn in Egypt in 671 AH [1272-1273 CE] he came to Anatolia where he spent a considerable period -according to Ibn Qāḍī Shuhbah ’s Ṭabaqat, 21 years in total, according to Çelebi (based on Subki and other Mamluk biographers) 11 years in Konya, 5 years in Sivas, and 1 year in Kayseri. al-Subkī states he was patronised by Sirāj al-Dīn al-Urmawī, author of al-Tahsil, ie. Sirāj al-Dīn al-Urmawī. He then settled in Damascus where taught in various madarasas including al-Zahiriyya, and died in 715 AH [1315 CE]. He was a specialist in Ash‘ari kalam and Shafi‘i fiqh.
