Biographical notes

Nothing is known about Ḫıżır b. ʿAbdullāh other than his being the author of the Kitābü’l-edvār, which he wrote upon the request of Murād II. His knowledge of musical theory, astronomy and Arabic indicates that he must have received some formal education. In his work, he mentions the names of other specialists (üstād) in the palace at Edirne.

Notes

A 15th century [1400-1499 CE] treatise on musical theory written upon the request of Murād II. It is centered on the concept of primary modes (maḳām). With its focus on Zodiac signs, celestial bodies, the four elements etc., the work is an example of the decline of Systematist theory and the return to the cosmological tradition. At the end of the work, the author gives a list of 204 secondary modes (terkīb), 144 of which are his own creation.
