Biographical notes

He was the ninth Bey of the Jandarid (Candaroğlu) dynasty and last ruler of the Principality of Isfendiyar (İsfendiyar Beyliği). The Turkmen rulers of this beylik controlled mostly the provinces of Kastamonu and Sinop of modern day Turkey but extended its influence over the neighbouring provinces of Zonguldak, Bartın, Karabük , Samsun, Bolu, Ankara and Çankırı. Their reign began in the early 14th century [1300-1399 CE] and lasted until the decade of the 1464 [1464 CE] when the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II put the principality under direct control of the Ottomans. While the reign of Kamāl al-Dīn Ismā’il was politically characterised by constant rivalry with the growing Ottoman power, it also favoured the production of a good number of literary works. The name of Kamāl al-Dīn Ismā’il appears as patron of a variety of works produced in 15th century [1400-1499 CE] Anatolia. For example, his name appears connected with works of different genres such as the Risālah’i Munjī yah (رسالۀ منجیه) by Niksarlı Muhyiddin Mehmed or the compendium of poems of Hamidı̂, 1427?-1485? known as Külliyyāt-ı dīvān-ı Mevlānā Ḥāmidī (this work was publisheded in Istanbul in 1949 [1949 CE], see (Ertaylan, İsmail Hikmet. Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Dergisi. 3 1949: 275-294., pp. Hamidi)) and a work by the mathematician Fethullah Şirvani. In addition, he was an important bibliophilic as shown by his donation of 300 books to the library of the religious scholar Niksarlı Muhyiddin Mehmed (see (Yücel, Yaşar. Apart from his literary patronage, he also supported the construction of mosques, public baths (ḥammām) and kitchens, madrasas and lodges in Sinop and Kastamonu. He himself was the author of one work, the Ḥulūyāt-i Shāhī, that addresses a number of rites and ceremonies performed by Muslims and how they should be carried out. His date of dead is unsure but we know he moved to Yenishehr after he was forced to surrender to Mehmed II in 1464 [1464 CE]. He might have died close to this date.

Notes

A treatise on ritual obligations in Islam (ʻibādāt). The work is divided in 77 chapters covering different aspects of Islamic rituals such as prayers, fasting, pilgrimage, etc. The author composed the work at a very young age as is indicated in a chronogram visible in a manuscript held in Paris. Some identified sources of the work are the Persian Targhīb al-ṣalāt (ترغىب الصلوة) of Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad Zāhid, محمد بن احمد زاهد , The Ṣalāt-i Masʿūdīصلوة مسعودی) and other text considered as based on the Hanafi and Shafi’ traditions. Date of composition 803 AH [1400-1401 CE]
