- Biographical notes
- Born in Damascus in 792 AH [1390 CE], Akşemseddin came to Anatolia, to Amasya, in the company of his father, at the age of seven. He is said to have studied with Shaykh Bedreddin and became a Qur’an-teacher at Osmancık. He later joined the Zayniyya order and then became an associate of Haci Bayram-i Veli who appointed him his successor (halife) He made Beypazarı and Göynük the centre of activities, but gained favour at the Ottoman court for his medical expertise. He participated in the conquest of Constantinople and is credited with finding the tomb of the Umayyad hero Abu Ayyub Ansari from which the district of Eyüp now takes its name. He died at Göynük. Akşemseddin was the subject of a Menakibname by Enisi which survives in several mss, and is the main source for his life (this has been published in Yurd 1972: 7-142).
