Biographical notes
Burhaneddin was born into a scholarly family in Kayseri; on his mother’s side he claimed kinship to the Seljuk dynasty. After studying in Syria and Egypt he returned to Anatolia in 1365 [1365 CE], entering the service of the ruler of Kayseri, the Eretnid Mehmet Beg, and was in 780 AH [1378 CE]appointed vizier toMehmet Beg’s successor Alaeddin Ali Beg. In 783 AH [1381 CE], he proclaimed himself ruler, with Sivas as his capital. His rule was spent in frequent wars with the Ottomans and Timur, 1336-1405 , during which time he also pursued his literary activities and composed the two Arabic prose works which have come done to us. We are uniquely well informed about his rule owing to the detailed panegyric biography by his courtier ‘Aziz b. Ardashir Astarabadi . However, he is best known as one of the earliest Turkish poets to try to emulate the Persian ghazal, even if his Dīvān evidently had a limited circulation.
